BACKGROUND
Douglas Fir is an invasive species in New Zealand and was brought here by the early gold miners who came from the west coast mining fields of America. The species found near perfect growing conditions in the Otago Gold fields. There are few diseases here to affect the growth and few insects to attack it. Douglas Fir is grown as a plantation species in the lower half of the South Island where it's used as a building timber. When distilled with steam it is a sweet smelling oil. We source our Douglas Fir oil from North Otago.
